Baku
What is the Baku?
In Japanese folklore, a baku is a mythical creature known as the "eater of dreams." It is said to devour nightmares, providing peace and comfort to those troubled by bad dreams.
The baku is often depicted as a chimeric animal, combining features of various creatures. For instance, it may have the body of a bear, the legs of a tiger, the trunk and tusks of an elephant, the eyes of a rhinoceros, and the tail of an ox. This eclectic appearance symbolizes its unique and magical nature.
The baku is sometimes invoked by people who wake up from a nightmare. They might say a phrase like “Baku-san, come eat my dreams,” to ask for its help. However, folklore warns not to rely on the baku too often, as it may also devour your hopes and aspirations if overused.
