Jiangshi
What is the Jangshi?
The Jiangshi (僵尸), also known as a "hopping vampire" or "hopping zombie," is a creature from Chinese folklore. It is a reanimated corpse that preys on the life force (qi) of the living. Jiangshi are usually depicted as stiff, pale-skinned corpses dressed in Qing Dynasty official robes. Because of rigor mortis, they move by hopping with their arms outstretched. They are often blind but can detect their victims by sensing their breath. Various Taoist rituals and talismans are believed to control or repel them, with the most famous method being a yellow paper talisman placed on their forehead. The Jiangshi legend has influenced many horror films, books, and games, blending elements of vampires, zombies, and ghosts.
